Why we donate to UNRWA
Arabic In Depth is dedicated to the promotion of the Arabic language and Arabic culture, and as such, we strongly believe that our goals align with those of UNRWA (the United Nations Relief Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East). UNRWA is a relief and human development agency created in 1949 to provide support for Palestinian refugees, including primary and vocational education.
Despite being a colonized country, Palestine has one of the highest literacy rates in the Arab world, and that’s in large part due to the work of UNRWA. The agency is the main provider of education to Palestinian refugees, including internally displaced refugees.
Education is one of the main tools of preserving and sustaining a culture. Through its work, UNRWA is helping to keep Palestinians connected to their culture and fight against the cultural colonization of Palestine.
However, the agency has been undergoing funding cuts. As a result, it has had to undertake austerity measures, which are bound to negatively impact the Arabic language and Arabic culture in Palestine. Because of this, we at Arabic In Depth have committed to donating US$5.00 to UNRWA with the sale of each Palestine Square Kufic Calligraphy Painting T-shirt. “One cannot expect positive results from an educational or political action program which fails to respect the particular view of the world held by the people. Such a program constitutes cultural invasion, good intentions notwithstanding.”
